Google is taking a second swing at augmented reality with a new SDK called “ ARcore ”. It is developed from the same fundamental technologies as tango’s and is a direct take on Apple’s ARkit. After experimenting with Project Tango, an AR initiative launched in 2014 that loaded a smartphone up with custom sensors, Google’s AR reboot brings functionality to regular old android phones through the magic of software.

If you’re drawing mental comparisons with Apple’s ARkit then you’re on right track.Project Tango was cooked up by Google’s ATAP group AR core is the collaboration between the android and VR group, two groups with a ton of resources. Earlier it was compatible with Samsung galaxy S8 and Google Pixel but thankfully, with the help of Thomas  Suarez, it is now possible to run ARcore on unsupported devices as well.

If you’re having doubt for this, fret not and check the procedure here for getting ARcore on your device :

Google ARCore

  • Google isn’t aiming ARcore on Android devices only, it’s also releasing “ prototype browsers for web developers “ that support the SDK too, and the company says, “ these custom browsers allow developers to create AR – enhanced websites and run them on both android /iOS ARkit.

ARcore works with Java, Unity and Unreal focuses :

  1. MOTION TRACKING: ARcore determines both the position and orientation of the phone as it moves.
  2. ENVIRONMENTAL UNDERSTANDING: It is common for AR objects to be placed on floor or table. ARcore can detect the horizontal surfaces using the same feature.
  3. LIGHT ESTIMATION: ARcore observes the ambient light in the environment and makes it possible for developers to light virtual objects in ways that match their surroundings.

ARCore for Android Device

ARcore is just a preview today, and there’s a lot  Google still needs to figure out or announce. For starters we have our doubts regarding the name – we’re not sure it will be something consumers ever see.
