Buying and how to use a metal detector

Youth metal detector – Finding the best metal detector for a specific purpose is a lot like buying any other piece of electronics. Whether for profit or as a hobby while the cost of a metal detector is always important it should not be the most important factor in determining which one to buy. Spending a few more dollars for a model with specific features can mean the difference between finding gold with a metal detector or finding an old discarded tin can. Consider these suggestions when shopping for a new youth metal detector and use them as part of any purchase decision. And before that you need to know how to use a metal detector.

Metal Detector Types

Lower quality youth metal detector, lower cost metal detectors will often use a sensing technology known as a beat frequency oscillation (BFO). BFO detectors tend to be the least accurate and do not allow for discrimination, meaning that they cannot tell the difference between the types of metal that they discover. A step up from the BFO detectors are very low frequency detectors (VLF) where two coils are used, one to transmit and one to receive.

At the high end are newer pulse induction detectors (PI) that tend to be the most flexible and easily tuned to different soil conductivity types. Finding gold with a metal detector is possible with it if there is a gold there.

Metal Detector Electronics- Important Considerations

Just as important as the sensing mechanism is the electronics package that monitors what the sensing coil picks up. Also very important is ability of a detector to do ground balancing (setting the sensitivity to allow for different soil types). Here you need to know how to use a metal detector.

At the low end of the scale are metal detectors that have a factory set ground balance level. These types of detectors are set to work across a wide range of soils and cannot be adjusted for specific conditions. At this lower end are also detectors that use audible tones only to alert the operator to metals buried under the surface. The best metal detectors on the other hand will have an LCD screen as well as use variable discrimination (better) or notch filter discrimination (best).

In variable discrimination units a dial or switch allows the operator to set a ground balance limit under which all readings will be ignored. If a soil has a lot of iron deposits in it the variable discrimination can be set to a level where it will not pick up the dispersed metals and minerals and only notice when something larger such as a gold ring or coin are found.

The best metal detectors provide notch filter discrimination, allowing the user to set a specific level of sensitivity that allows them to zero in on specific metal types while filtering out most others. Some have an LCD display that tells the user what type of metal is bring sensed as well as how deep under the surface it is buried.

Conclusions: How to use a metal detector of various budgets

If a user is on a budget look for a VLF metal detector with variable discrimination tuning. If a buyer can afford to though spend a little more and invest in a unit with notch filter discrimination and pulse induction sensing. Also look for units that come with a built in arm rest that makes swinging the unit back and forth much easier and less tiring on the user.

In all cases a serious user should also invest in a good pair of closed cup headphones to make the unit easier to monitor while in use. For those intending to use a metal detector at the beach look for units with sealed housings to protect against water infiltration.

Finding and buying the best metal detector for a specific user has to be a balance between cost and versatility. Going cheap will often leave the user unsatisfied with the final results. Whenever possible hold off on purchasing a metal detector until the users budget allows them to invest in a model that has the features and capabilities that will make using the metal detector more fun and profitable.

Pirate Treasure and Youth Metal Detector

For pirates, treasure or booty was anything that had value. This could be gold, gems, exotic woods or fruits, spices, fabrics. Anything that could be sold! Some pirates hid their booty from time to time. Sometimes they never made it back to reclaim it, and thus others found it, leading to tales of treasure hunting.

Even today, there are wild rumors of treasure that has never been found.

Here is what you can do to satisfy your pirates and their desire for treasure! Here is to know how to use a metal detector.

Make your own treasure map with youth metal detector. Have each child make their own map, complete with clues to the treasure. An island is usually a popular choice. Try to have mountains, bays, forests, rivers, and all sorts of landmarks. Name each one a pirate-worthy name, like Skull Mountain, Red River, Fierce Forest.

Buried Treasure Send in your own treasure – Bury “treasure” in sand. You can do this outdoors in a sandbox, or, like I did, fill a decent sized plastic container with play sand. Bury any treasure you want. I chose pretty colored beads from a local craft store. After the kids found them all, I gave them leather jewelery string, also bought at the craft store, and they made cool bracelets and necklaces out of them. Even the boys liked this! I “discovered” the treasure outside our door. Included with it was a fake letter from a Captain Etarip. Follow this link to an example. It was fun, and the kids enjoyed it.

For a quick math lesson, assign the beads different values, and have kids add up the worth of their find!

Have your own treasure hunt with the use of youth metal detector. Hide clues around the house leading to a small treasure.

    • The metal Detectors are useful for finding metal which is may be gold, iron, cupper etc if the senser comes near a picece of metal it indcated by a changing audio sound tone in speaker or earphones, or led glow on an indicator.
